How I Bring Clarity to Crypto Products

Crypto products are not difficult only because of unfamiliar terms.

A user may be moving money, opening a leveraged position, approving wallet access or waiting for funds to cross networks. A small misunderstanding can lead to a real loss.

That changes how I approach the design work.

I start with the risk

Before designing screens, I try to answer four questions:

  • What is the user trying to do?

  • What could they misunderstand or lose?

  • What can the system not guarantee?

  • What can the user do if something goes wrong?

I review the existing flow, available user evidence and technical constraints with product and engineering. This usually reveals the real problem before polished interface work begins.

I map more than the happy path

The successful journey is often the easiest part.

Crypto products also need to handle pending transactions, rejected orders, expired quotes, network delays, insufficient balances, partial fills and failed identity checks.

I map these states early and give each one a clear next action. “Something went wrong” is not useful if the user does not know whether to retry, wait or contact support.

I design around the decision

For every important action, the interface should explain:

  • What will change?

  • What will it cost?

  • When will it be complete?

  • Can it be cancelled or reversed?

In trading, position size, margin, PnL and liquidation risk should remain close to the action. In a wallet, the confirmation should show what leaves, what returns and which permissions are being granted.

Technical details should remain available, but they should not be the first thing users must understand.

I balance speed with clarity

Experienced users want to move quickly. New users need more context.

I keep frequent actions visible and move supporting information into drawers, panels or secondary views. Warnings appear when there is a real risk—not before every routine action.

The same principle applies to smaller screens. A dense desktop product should be reorganised for mobile, not simply reduced in size.

I stay involved after handoff

I prototype and test the moments with the greatest consequence: confirmations, errors, permissions, recovery and risk states.

The work continues during implementation. I review responsive behaviour, loading states, empty states, long values and error handling with engineering.

A design is not finished when the file is handed over. It is finished when the released experience behaves as intended.

The takeaway

Good crypto UX does not pretend the underlying complexity has disappeared.

It gives users the right information at the right moment, makes risk visible and always explains what happens next.
